Special Needs
Within the term ‘Special Needs’ used at Awsworth Schoolhouse children can be considered to have moderate to severe learning difficulties, physical and neurological impairments, speech and language difficulties, emotional and behavioural difficulties and specific learning difficulties. Awsworth Schoolhouse aims to work in line with the three-stage model set by the Department of Further Education in its 1994 Code of Practice for children with Special Educational Needs. (Details of which are held in the Nursery). It is the intention of Awsworth Schoolhouse to provide a welcoming and appropriate learning opportunity for all children. Children with Special Needs will be integrated into the Nursery whenever possible so that they may begin pre- school provision at the same age as the rest of their age group. We will do this by:
  • Identifying, assessing and then providing adequate and appropriate provision. This will be done through discussions with parents, outside external agencies and the child itself where possible, by being aware of his/her needs. A written statement will be provided indicating how the needs of the child will be met to best ensure that they have access, alongside their peers, to facilities, activities and play opportunities provided whenever reasonable in order to promote their welfare and development. This statement will be discussed and reviewed (with the child if appropriate) and the parent/carer.

  • Directly communicating and liaison with the main parent/carer of the child in order to acknowledge parental knowledge and expertise to their child, as well as becoming aware of their needs, feelings and making them aware of the procedures we have in place to support them and their child whilst at the Nursery.
  • Providing where possible any special services and equipment for the child in our care.
  • Designating an appropriate staff member to deal with queries, concerns and communications, between parents, external agencies and the Nursery. This person will be the Nursery Manager/Deputy Manager.
